A very distinguishing feature of the OG approach is its SOS technique - simultaneous oral spelling. This approach to blending is extremely useful as one can easily modify it to suit the needs of each individual. By incorporating this technique of spelling/writing will help the student to read (analyzing and synthesizing). Both create a greater awareness of words and this is fuel to go on.
A portion of the lesson consist of SOS - basically a spelling test. There will be a few sight words and with that they are always asked to "letter name and spell". And the rest will be phonetic words - "sound as you spell". Before each word they are asked to " watch me, repeat - ____________spell." Each student will be different since they will be either reviewing known words or just taught sight words/ phonetic words.
Some students will be dependent upon vocalizing, some will find it helpful to know the letter names and to see the letters as they attempt to blend, others will become confused by relating name and sound to the symbols. Others may find it distracting to move symbols in space while hearing and vocalizing the sounds in sequential order. If blending will lead the student to better reading, we must make every effort to teach this skill as soon as the student is ready to learn it. Most are extremely successful with the multisensory approach to accomplish the task.
