Lesson cards are great visuals to show the students the different activities you complete within one hour lesson. Usually the first few lessons I will show them the card relating to the activity that I will be doing with them. After I feel that the student has grasped the different elements of an OG tutor lesson (visual drill, auditory drill, mixed SOS, reading/comprehension, equations, penmanship, sight words, sequencing, word problems, new work) then I will change it up - they will be allowed to decide which activity would be completed. I will take out the game card (the most anticipated activity for most students) and tell them that "if we complete at least 4 activities (cards) then your reward will be a game of your choice." I usually will turn over the cards and have them pick randomly. Be flexible and start with a number that they would realistically complete, for example start with 4 activities the 1st day, then if completed successfully then next class increase it to 5 then to 6 next time.
When the student gets to choose their activity they feel a sense of accomplishment after completion of each activity and at the same time they get to practice setting realistic goals for themselves. These are confidence builders that are important for children with learning disabilities. Being able to see the activity visually with words/pictures will help them also with organization and having structure for learning activities. These cards help students to keep on task and stay focus until the next activity. Keep in mind that these cards will vary depending on which subject - Reading, writing, math.
These cards can be personalized - allow students to create their own lesson card deck. Also, they can create stickers for journal records. Being able to see their own progress is another confidence booster!!
