Are you constantly asking your child to complete their homework? Is your child having a hard time with homework-don't know how to complete it?
Homework does not have to be a chore or an activity that your child dreads!! Although I admit most of the homework is tedious exercises over exercises of practicing and memorizing. You can help change that! If you start showing different ways to approach and complete homework I'm sure your child will learn to use it as a tool for reviewing learned concepts (which is one of the goals why teachers assign homework).
All kids love playing games??!! Why not change studying for tests as a opportunity to create a fun game with you and your child? Think of fun prizes (a favorite food- bag of chips, cookies, donuts, play for a small amount of money) You can have blank board games that they can create accordingly to the subject - history, social studies, geography. You can create obstacle courses filled with questions/answers on cue cards around the house as a fun review instead of just sitting down and answering questions.
For practicing for language tests is to make a song and sing it aloud like karaoke. If your child likes to draw they can create a picture story on history events which helps them visualize and remember things. Another great game to play to review homework is also Pictionary - great for practicing vocabulary tests. Math tests or homework - for word problems have them draw out the problem or even better have them act it out or use manipulatives.
Sometimes playing these games with your child also is a good indicator for you to see how much they understand in school and show you which areas they may need more help in. My basic modo is 'make learning fun' - use games as much as possible - homework really don't only have to be just a sit down and write and read activity.
