Reading and writing was always a struggle for me. Although I was born in Vancouver, my first language was Cantonese. It wasn't until age 5 til I was introduced to learning english. Now at the age of 33, I am pretty much mixed up somewhere in between - not too good in English and not too good in Cantonese. My mom probably have hired over 10 tutors to help me and my twin sister in my elementary/highschool years --> in hope to improve our reading & writing skills -- sadly my English grades always kept at a C to a C- level. After becoming an OG tutor, I've wished that my mom would have hired an OG tutor to help us during those school years. I would have had a whole new perspective in learning English --> instead of thinking I hate English, I hate writing, I'm never going to get it, I'm not good in anything!!! I can reassure you that OG improves on the student's confidence!!! Which I think is the core in learning anything.
I'm not trying to offend any non-OG tutors out there, I was a typical tutor myself for many years. I just believe that OG tutoring works for students who struggle in learning English or Math. When I used to tutor, it was boring .... give the student a topic to write on, correct it.... just give him an exercise over exercise to practice whatever he doesn't get!! I try to make it fun sometimes but majority was just giving him exercises/ worksheets to do. Within a hour a typical tutor will probably touch base on one topic. OG tutoring will touch base on writing, spelling, penmanship, reading, sounds, sight words, visual/auditory drills. They are all presented in a specific way and when new work is presented ---> it is always in a fun/multisensory way. It is always different for every student too.....so it is fun also for the tutor because it always changes depending on the level of your student. Usually I present new work in a game format, it helps students to be more engaged in the topic and they seem to remember/ absorb the info alot better.
OG tutoring is diagnostic.....so before officially tutoring with any students, I have a diagnostic lesson where I learn what level the child's reading, writing, spelling, speaking, visual/auditory, sequencing skills, sight words, penmanship, known phonetic sounds. I compile the info from this diagnostic lesson with any other report cards/ assessments to plan all my lessons. As a typical tutor, I did offer my own diagnostic lesson but it wasn't as comprehensive and detailed as an OG tutor would have done. OG tutoring is prescriptive to the student ---> before as a typical tutor, every student was pretty much the same to me.....so I always taught the same way, gave the same exercises/worksheets. My students that I've had as an OG tutor has improved faster and they all have a whole new perspective in the subjects they are struggling in.....the improvements are endless not minimal. Within weeks in OG tutoring, students change in how they view English and Math....we need these skills everyday because we use them everyday....and you will be surprised of how many children don't realize this...
In conclusion, OG tutoring is making learning fun.....remembering that every student learns differently, at different speeds....gotta take all that in and be multi-sensory in your teaching. This will engage your students and make everything more interesting. I use their known information/ sounds to build successful learning opportunities for them - this will build their confidence & self esteem.
